Dry Skin - Causes and Treatment

Winter weather is one of skin's worst enemies. Although winter weather will put your skin through more wear and tear than usual, there are other factors that should be considered while talking care of your skin.

To keep your skin moisturized, supple and younger a proper regimen has to be followed. This has the advantage of cutting down on wrong habits of skin treatment and self medication which may further damage your skin instead of rejuvenating it.

\"dry Skin\"

"Xerosis" is the dermatological term for dry skin. "Pruritus" is another extreme condition of xerosis where the skin moisture is completely absent and results in scaling, itching and cracking.

Dry Skin - Causes and Treatment

Your skin needs a minimum amount of moisture to maintain itself of its suppleness and flexibility. Lack of such moisture content renders your skin entirely unprotected.

Moisture less skin is also very vulnerable to seepage of harmful ultra violet rays from the sun to the subcutaneous tissue and cause irreparable damage.

The undesirable condition of dry skin can be caused by a variety of factors. Identifying these will help you to prevent them through proper and timely care. Check the soap you use for ingredients that may be harsh in nature. Soaps that are deodorizing or anti-bacterial are strong and tend to rob your skin of required moisture and oils rendering it dry.

Here are some tips to avoid dry skin. Avoid washing with hot water, and avoid washing too frequently. Frequent bathing with hot water may expose your skin to infections by removing the moisture retaining ingredients. If you are used to bathing with hot water and cannot resist the temptation, try replacing it with lukewarm water to lessen the effect of skin dryness.

Frequent wash and bath, usually more than once a day and it depletes your body with moisture and natural oils. Also, limit your bathing time within 15 minutes.

Effective moisturizers are dependent on your immediate and long-term needs. If you want to relieve itching caused by dry skin, ordinary moisturizers will serve your purpose.

Balanced-diet and exercise: Drinking plenty of water is also important.

If these and other treatments are not effective in alleviating all the symptoms of drying skin, it is best that you consult a professional dermatologist so they can closely monitor the cause of dryness.

Dry Skin on Dogs - The 6 Main Causes

Dry skin on dogs causes problems for everyone. Your dog is miserable and can't stop itching, biting, and scratching. You're miserable because you know something is bothering your dog and you just can't take the scratching and biting anymore. If dry skin on your dog is a problem for you, here are the three main causes and how you can put a stop to it.

#1 -- Allergies to Food

\"dry Skin\"

Dogs can be allergic to many different types of food. The most common are wheat and corn which are used very often in dog food as fillers. If your dog has patches that bother him especially bad and he starts losing hair, he could be allergic to his food. The only way to know what your dog is allergic to is with an "elimination" diet where you start by only feeding your dog one food at a time. If he doesn't have any problems with that food, add another to his diet. You'll know he's allergic to the food when he starts scratching and biting again. One of the best ways of going about an elimination diet is with vet supervision. He can give you a schedule of what to feed your dog and when.

Dry Skin on Dogs - The 6 Main Causes

#2 -- Allergies to Fleas

If your dog is allergic to fleas, he will have red, swollen spots on his skin where he bites incessantly. You can treat allergies to fleas by buying medicine containing antibiotics or steroids from your pet store. To treat him, trim the hair around the spots, clean the spot and apply the medicine. Your dog may have a severe allergy to fleas and may need stronger antibiotics or an antihistamine from the vet.

#3 -- Lack of Grooming

Dogs produce their own natural oil that protects their skin from drying out. By grooming by brushing him at least once each week, you can help spread this protective oil over his skin and relieving some of the dryness.

#4 -- Too much Bathing

A common mistake dog owners make with their dogs is bathing them too often. Bathing your dog once each week or even more often is too much. The frequency that you should bathe your dog is according to his breed and his living conditions. Ask your vet how often dogs your breed need to be bathed to make sure you're not overdoing it.

#5 -- Shampoo

Pet owners often use human shampoo when bathing their dogs. Dog hair and skin isn't like that of humans. The perfumes and chemicals in human shampoo can dry out your dog's skin too much or can irritate his skin causing him to scratch. Only use shampoo made specifically for dogs.

#6 -- Poor Health

Poor health often causes skin problems on dogs. While he may look healthy, dry skin, scratching and biting could be signs that he isn't. The biggest cause for poor health in dogs feeding them bad dog food. In a perfect world, all dog food would be nutritionally complete. Unfortunately, that isn't the case. To keep costs down, many dog food manufacturers use fillers that don't have any nutritional value at all. Any food you feed your dog should have meat listed as the first ingredient. Stay away from dog food that lists corn, ground corn, or wheat as the main ingredient.

To play it safe, give your dog supplements to be sure he is getting all the nutrition he needs. Don't let your dog suffer with dog skin problems. Know and be able to recognize these six main causes of dry skin on dogs and give him the relief and help he needs.

Causes for Dry Skin Around Your Mouth

When dry skin is evident around your mouth, it could be more than just xerosis, or having naturally dry skin. If dry skin only appears around the oral area, it can be an indication of a skin condition called eczema, or dermatitis.

Although physicians have long been aware of the existence of this disease, nobody really knows what causes eczema. Nevertheless, studies have already proven that eczema, more often than not, affects the facial area; this, of course, includes the mouth. When you have eczema, you'll notice that besides having dry skin, the affected areas also appear red or swollen. These areas are also particularly sensitive and most times, itchy. In the worst cases, the skin affected can chap, crack or even bleed.

\"dry Skin\"

SEBORRHEIC DERMATITIS

Causes for Dry Skin Around Your Mouth

Another disease that could cause dry skin to appear around your mouth is seborrheic dermatitis, a kind of eczema. This type of dermatitis occurs when the skin is especially rich in sebum or oil. It may sound contradictory that excessive oil leads to dry skin. However, medical experts have already established this connection.

A person can suffer from seborrheic dermatitis because of the existence of malassezia, a type of yeast, on the skin. While a lot of people are not bothered by its presence, some individuals may develop skin problems because of it. Such irritation happens due to sudden or extreme changes in weather, increased stress levels or excessive scratching.

CONTACT DERMATITIS

Another type of dermatitis, contact dermatitis, is caused by an irritant or allergen. When the skin comes into contact with said irritant or allergen, it becomes particularly sensitive. Naturally, the best way to treat contact dermatitis is to find out what caused it. By correctly identify the allergen, the sufferer can avoid future contact with it.

Dry Skin - What You Can Do When Menopause Causes Itchiness

Menopause is sometimes responsible for bouts of dry skin, particularly around the mouth, nose areas, as well as internally within the eyes. This dryness can be caused by the hormonal imbalances. During menopause, estrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels decline and different types of "dryness" can occur.

For example, testosterone maintains the lacrimal gland which produces tears in the eyes and keeps them lubricated. Keep in mind, not only is testosterone responsible for producing tears but it is responsible for nourishing it with lubrication to aid in sight. When testosterone production declines the lacrimal gland fails to work as well, the ocular surface of the eye is exposed to the elements causing dryness. In essence, we need the right amounts of testosterone levels to lubricate the eyes.

\"dry Skin\"

Testosterone is to the eyes as estrogen is to the mouth, joints, and skin. Lowered estrogen levels can cause skin dryness as well as affect other areas of the body including joints and of course the dreaded vaginal dryness which can make intercourse painful. Estrogen keeps the vagina moist by producing certain acids that account for vaginal lubrication. With estrogen, the vaginal lining becomes stiff and toughened, which results in uncomfortable sex without the aid of jellies and artificial lubricants. The less estrogen your body produces, the drier your skin becomes.

Dry Skin - What You Can Do When Menopause Causes Itchiness

Your eyes might also become light sensitive, look red, burn, have excessive tearing or feel gritty. Other illness such as arthritis and autoimmune disorders can affect the levels of dryness. In addition, some medications worsen this condition such as beta blockers, codeine, decongestant eye drops such as Visine and decongestants like Sudafed. In some cases you can reduce the level of dry eyes by eating less meat, fried foods and dairy. Eating walnuts with omega 3 fatty acids can protect your eyes. Wear sunglasses outside to reduce evaporation of moisture in the eyes.

The good news is: you can influence the dryness of your eyes, mouth, joints and skin during menopause. First of all, refrain from smoking. We all know that smoking is scientifically proven to speed up menopause in women and worsen its symptoms. Again, get your hormone panels done so you can balance out any significant losses in the three hormones mentioned above.

For dry skin, apply lotion often to keep it silky feeling. Aquaphor is excellent product for dry skin; however its primary ingredient is petrolatum (Vaseline). So if you don't like that greasy feeling, you won't like this product. On the other hand, Lubriderm's Advanced Therapy Lotion for extra dry skin lubricates nicely but runs on the expensive side.

Moisturel is good for hands and general body areas that are scaly and itchy. Keep in mind that dry, patchy, scaly skin can indicate other health issues including anxiety, allergies, eczema, psoriasis, etc. See a doctor if you suspect you have any of these.

As a general rule of thumb, you want products with petrolatum, water, lanolin and/or mineral oil. When you clean your face, leave a little water on your skin and then apply moisturizer while your skin is still damp. Neutrogena's new Deep Clean Gentle Scrub is a good exfoliant. and Cetaphil is a great cleanser. Apply Chap Stick to your lips to prevent them from chapping, and if they are cracking and sore, use Bag Balm.

Keep oil in your diet, or add it if you are low-fat enthusiast. Good oils include canola, safflower, sunflower, olive and flaxseed - mega-3 oils. Finally, drink plenty of water. This can't be understated; we all need at least 64 oz a day.

What Causes Bags Under the Eyes, Puffy Eyes & Dark Circles?

Puffy eyes and dark circles can make a person appear years older than they deserve as well as giving a tired out and unhealthy looking appearance. However, many of us today suffer the depressing effects of puffy eyes or dark circles even though we may not actually feel old or worn out. Such an affliction can be seen among younger people as well as those of us who are of more advanced in years. So, if you are looking to rejuvenate your skin and attain a more youthful and healthier looking appearance, one of the most important things that you can do is banish your under eye bags and those dark circles under the eyes.

In order to remedy the problem of puffy eyes or dark circles, we must first understand what causes them.

Moisturiser

Whilst sleep deprivation or interrupted sleep cycles can be the more common causes of dark circles or eye puffiness they are by no means the only cause.

Dark circles under the eyes are largely the result of tiny leakages of blood passing through the capillaries close to the surface of the skin. As the skin is so thin in the area under the eyes these tiny leakages can show through as a dark area of discolouration.

Nasal inflammation and sinus congestion can cause those dark circles around the eyes. The congestion and inflammation slows down and impairs the blood flow through the tiny vessels found in our facial area, trapping it and as a consequence blood may pool in this area and show through the skin usually near our eyes causing a purplish like circle!!

Proper identification and treatment of sinus issues will go along way in making you feel better and healthier, and for most will aid greatly in the diminishing the dark under eye shadow appearance.

Fluid retention can be the cause of puffy eyes, a common occurrence in the morning as fluid builds up while you sleep. While some degree of puffiness may be normal for a given individual, factors such as age and fatigue may make the swelling more prominent. Conditions including pregnancy and hormonal variations to do with menstruation can lead to the retention of fluid. These conditions can also cause swelling around the eyes to be more prominent.

Try switching to a pillow that will raise your head slightly as elevating the head while sleeping can help the redistribution of fluid that is associated with eye swelling.

A low-carbohydrate diet will help prevent eye puffiness by preventing water retention. Eating more foods rich in vitamins, especially the vitamins A, C and E helps to reduce eye puffiness and to maintain clear, moist skin. Check out your diet. Excess amounts of salt in your diet can encourage fluid retention, don't rely too heavily on ready made meals and take-away foods, they often have high salt contents and of course are known to contain preservatives that prolong shelf life.

A cold compress near the eye can act as a short-term remedy as cold temperature constricts the blood vessels preventing the flow of fluid into tissues and diminishing puffiness. Severe and persistent puffiness may be a sign of some serious medical condition and should therefore be referred to your Doctor.

If you have tired or strained eyes lavender oil can offer some gentle relief; In 2-½ cup water, add a few drops of lavender oil and mix well. Take two cotton balls and dip in this solution. Squeeze out the extra water and place the cotton balls over the eyes.

There are many pricey 'miracle' creams and products on the market that promise many wonderful things, but few deliver any meaningful results. The few that do have a beneficial effect are those that are specifically manufactured with certain problems in mind. For instance an ordinary moisturizer will not solve the problem of dark circles.

Always check labels before you buy. One recommendation is to look for a good eye cream to help reduce dark circles and puffiness, one for instance containing the Vitamin K to help strengthen the tiny capillaries just below the skin around the eyes; it will help blood flow and prevent any slight leakage.

What Are The Major Causes Of Dry Skin?

Nobody wants to suffer from dry skin especially since it may lead to more serious skin conditions With that being said, what makes dry-skin form and how can it be avoided?

There are a lot of factors that contribute to the formation of dry skin. These factors include genetics, age, humidity, and an improper bathing regimen. Using products that contain harsh chemicals may also add up to the skin's dryness. Let us discuss each factor further.

Dry Skin

One of the factors mentioned was genetics. Sweat glands produce fluids to keep you moist and supple. These glands' proper functioning is critical in keeping the skin from drying. Some people that have less active sweat glands follow special routines to avoid drying out their body.

Age is also an important factor in the development of a better appearance. People age, and so does the glands which results in lower gland activity.

Humidity may be one of the greatest contributors to having dry skin. This is more evident during winter when the dry air causes the loss of moisture and produce cracks and peels. Some people follow certain skin care routine to avoid this. Keeping your body moisturized during these periods is essential.

Harsh chemicals may come from the products we commonly use everyday. Detergents, cleaners, and even soaps that contain harsh ingredients may lead to dry skin when used in direct contact.

In general moisturizing is key in preventing dry skin. Doing this after a bath is the best time since you are still damp and wet. This will provide the skin protection from its oils drying out. Knowing these factors will give you a good understanding in how to lessen if not avoid the formation of dry skin.

Ingrown Hair - Seven Causes & Eight Effects

Ingrown hair is a common problem for men and women. Use this list to easily identify the causes and effects of ingrown hair so you can make an educated decision on how to deal with this painful problem.

7 CAUSES

Dry Skin

  1. Skin suffering from lack of moisture
  2. Stiff beard hair
  3. Embedded oil in the hair follicles
  4. Build up of dead skin cells in the pores and on the surface of the skin can cause ingrown hairs - some are more prone to this than others due to genetics
  5. Coarse curly hair growing in a curved hair follicle
  6. Improper shaving technique with a blade such as too close a shave
  7. Hair removal methods such as shaving, waxing, tweezing, electrolysis, often irritate the hair follicle. Dead cells can accumulate at the site of the irritation and form papule which can also contain pus while the skin heals. While this process continues any hair in the area can get trapped under the formation and is prevented from exiting the skin properly. Ingrown hair is the result.

8 EFFECTS

  1. Constant tenderness
  2. Trapped hairs cause inflammation which result in the body forming papule - a small, raised, abnormality on the skin commonly known as a bump giving rise to the term 'razor bumps'
  3. The body can also respond by producing a pustule - a blister on the skin containing pus
  4. An infected pustule can become ruptured resulting in bleeding
  5. Itching
  6. Tingling
  7. Pain - mild or severe
  8. Hard, prominent, irregular scar tissue in the skin in chronic cases

Additional Advice: If you carry out skin exfoliation regularly with a loofah or mesh sponge after waxing or shaving, you'll take off the thin layer of skin that's trapping the hairs and set them free.

Wet the loofah and squeeze to soften if preferred, then gently massage the skin, especially dry, rough areas.

Do not use the loofah on broken skin. Some beauty advisors believe using a loofah once a week for skin exfoliation is enough to keep the area exfoliated. Exfoliating too much will dry the skin and leave it sensitive and susceptible to ingrown hair.

Sensitive Skin - Causes and Solutions

Sensitive skin is a condition affect millions of people. It is for certain, nothing to be ashamed of or worried about-at least until the symptoms begin to show. Sensitive skin covers everything from sudden blushing to the growth of hives or many other spots that itch or cause irritation.

Sensitive skin can be a perplexing and painful condition to bear. Nevertheless, with the right treatment, many sensitive skin problems can be managed to the point that a regular lifestyle is possible. The most complicating factor is the fact that there is no single cause of sensitive skin which is why no single sensitive skin care treatment will work everyone.

Dry Skin

The beginning symptoms of sensitive skin are usually subtle, but there are some known reactions to prove your have one. Have you noticed a tingling sensation in your skin or do you feel it tightening up-but can not see any discernible signs of a problem? Do you always search for skin care and hygienic products that does not cause an allergic reaction with your skin?

When you shave do you get severe reactions that lead to red or inflamed skin? Do people tell you your face and skin turn dark red when under stress? Do you always have dry skin or skin redness but you never actually found the cause? If your answer is yes to one or more of the above questions, then you definitely suffer from some form of sensitive skin.

The most common causes of sensitive skin problems are numerous but I will point out the most obvious ones. Sometimes you are born with the condition like blushing or itching easily and always. When you are especially prone to sunburn or getting freckles due to some sun exposure then the condition is in your genes. Another sign of genetic factors towards the condition is known allergic reaction to wool or latex gloves.

Foods we eat are the common cause of skin problems. It is different for everyone, but some foods can cause severe allergic reaction in some people. I am sure you have heard someone tell you, I don't eat beans or some other types of fruit. In some people increased stress makes them blush easily. While, in others just changing skin care products or medications can trigger an allergic reaction. The known triggers such as food, stress, medication, or skin care products that must be monitored and avoided.

For those with sensitive skin genes since birth, the best way is to accept the problem and then find a way to manage the condition. Simple common sense will be your best defense against known or newly discovered causes. If you're allergic to the sun just reduce your exposure or try sun protection cream or other popularly known aids from your local pharmacist.

If you're allergic to certain products or food avoid them at all cost. Keep a mental tab of or better yet keep a journal of products to stay away from because of known past allergic reactions to them. Simply by avoiding these conditions and situations, you can eliminate or limit the problems associated with the symptoms of sensitive skin while not completely altering your lifestyle.

If you suffer from dry skin condition, finding the right moisturizer is the proactive step you can take to limit sensitive skin problems. Try to only use natural moisturizers that contain no chemical ingredients or alcohol in them. Moisturizers made with all natural ingredients should be preferred to those made with chemicals or other artificial products because they are less likely to cause other allergic reactions common to those with sensitive skin.
